Meyler, his wife and two children were among the many persecuted Jews looking for a place in the latter part of 1942. Dr. Meyler found a place for himself while his wife and children hid elsewhere. Meyler and her children then had to leave their hiding place and subsequently found shelter with Dr. Lieuwe van Albada, his wife, Dorothea (called Dora), and their three young sons in Akkrum, Friesland. Lieuwe van Albada was a prominent figure in the village, being the local doctor, and was therefore the subject of much scrutiny. It did not go unnoticed that his house suddenly contained three more people and the story spread that the woman and her two children came from The Hague while her husband was ill with consumption in Switzerland. Dora van Albada encouraged these rumors, which made no mention of the refugees religion, because they unwittingly protected the Jewish family. Nevertheless, Mrs. Meyler and her four-year-old son soon had to leave, leaving six-year-old Annetje with the van Albadas for two years, until the end of the war. There were many occasions when Dora was required to be extremely inventive and show great self-control when confronted with hostile questions about the little foreign girl living in her house. The van Albadas hated the Nazis and their racist ideology and they were willing to take great risks to save lives. They and the Meylers remained in close touch after the war. On October 4, 1989, Yad Vashem recognized Lieuwe Evert Willem van Albada and his wife, Dorothea Allegonda van Albada-Jensma, as Righteous Among the Nations | |
